Wise Business fees

Bank transfer

Not a card processor. If your client can pay by bank transfer, this is almost always the cheapest route: conversion happens at the mid-market rate with an explicit fee instead of a hidden spread. Receiving account details cost a one-off €60 to set up.

Who Wise Business suits

Freelancers and small businesses whose clients can pay by bank transfer. You get local account details in several currencies, so a US client pays you like a domestic supplier and you convert at the mid-market rate with an explicit fee.

On the calculator's two reference payments, Wise Business takes 0.29% of $5,000.00 from a US client to a Spanish business, and 0% of €1,000.00 between Germany and Spain, where there is no currency to convert.

What to watch out for

  • This site models Wise for bank transfers only. If your client insists on paying by card, you need a card processor as well.
  • Receiving account details cost a one-off fee to set up.
  • Wires (as opposed to local transfers such as ACH) can carry their own receiving fee; check it before giving out the details for SWIFT payments.

How to pay less with Wise Business

  • Put the local account details on the invoice itself, with ACH named as the preferred method for US clients.
  • Keep money in the currency you will spend it in, and convert the rest in one go rather than invoice by invoice.
  • Compare the quoted conversion fee on large amounts: Wise publishes the fee before you convert, so there is nothing to guess.

Wise Business fees: questions

What are Wise Business fees for receiving money?

Receiving most currencies by local transfer (ACH in the US, Faster Payments in the UK, SEPA in the eurozone) is free; getting the account details costs a one-off fee. Converting costs a published percentage on top of the mid-market rate: 0.29% from dollars to euros, 0.33% from pounds to euros, 0.47% from euros to dollars. Wires (SWIFT) can carry their own receiving fee.

How much does Wise take from a $5,000 payment from a US client?

Into a euro account, $14.50: the client pays your US details by ACH and the only cost is converting the dollars at 0.29%. The same payment by card through Stripe costs $254.60.

Does Wise use the real exchange rate?

Yes. Wise converts at the mid-market rate, the midpoint you see on Google or Reuters, and charges its fee separately, showing it before you convert. Most card processors and banks build their margin into a worse rate instead.
